NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the lunar surface later this decade. For Artemis III, the agency selected Axiom Space to develop the next-generation spacesuit. Now, for Artemis IV, Axiom has brought in Prada to focus on the inner lining, a critical layer that must regulate temperature, wick moisture, and provide a soft interface against the astronaut's skin. The moon's surface temperature swings from minus 250°F in shadow to over 250°F in sunlight — demanding materials that can handle both extremes.

Prada's expertise in high-performance textiles, honed through decades of crafting luxury apparel and sportswear, became a key asset. The inner lining will incorporate advanced synthetic fibers and proprietary blends that maximize breathability while insulating against thermal shock. The companies have not disclosed exact material compositions, but insiders describe a mesh-like fabric with embedded phase-change materials that absorb, store, and release heat as needed.

The official announcement comes as NASA prepares for a series of uncrewed and crewed Artemis test flights. Artemis II, the first crewed orbital mission, is slated for late 2024, followed by Artemis III — the first landing — in late 2025 or 2026. Artemis IV, currently targeted for 2028, will be the first mission to use a lunar surface mobility system and the new spacesuits from Axiom with Prada's inner lining.
