The World’s Largest Superyacht Is About To Start Cruising—What’s Coming For REV Ocean?

The world's largest superyacht isn't being built for billionaires' parties. It's a floating laboratory. REV Ocean, a 182.9-meter vessel, is about to start cruising the globe on an audacious science mission.

Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke commissioned REV Ocean to become the largest and most advanced research superyacht ever built. It will conduct oceanographic research, study climate change, and explore deep-sea ecosystems. Construction finished at Norway's Vard shipyard in late 2025, and sea trials begin this month.

Superyachts have traditionally been symbols of luxury and status. Azzam, the previous record-holder at 180 meters, belongs to a UAE royal family. REV Ocean shatters that mold. Røkke, a former fisherman turned industrialist, publicly stated that profits from his fishing and oil ventures should fund ocean science. The vessel's design prioritises labs over lounges.

At 182.9 meters, REV Ocean is the world's largest superyacht by length. It packs 24 state-of-the-art laboratories, a 200-ton submersible capable of diving to 6,000 meters, a 110-meter moon pool, and a helicopter deck. Construction costs exceeded $380 million. The ship can host 60 scientists and crew in fully equipped facilities. The REV Ocean superyacht includes advanced sonar mapping systems, eDNA sampling tools, and autonomous underwater drones.

The science program is equally grand. Partnering with the UN Ocean Decade and WWF, REV Ocean will spend 100 days per year at sea. Early missions include mapping uncharted seamounts in the Pacific, surveying microplastic pollution in the Arctic, and deploying acoustic sensors to monitor whale migrations. The yacht will also serve as a platform for public outreach, streaming live research to classrooms worldwide.

Observers see this as a paradigm shift. “The REV Ocean superyacht proves that private wealth can accelerate ocean science at scales governments cannot match,” said Dr. Maria Durand, a marine policy expert at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Critics worry about greenwashing and the carbon footprint of a 7,000-ton ship. Yet its hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and catalytic scrubbers reduce emissions compared to conventional research vessels. The project has already sparked interest among other ultra-high-net-worth individuals, including tech billionaires exploring similar philanthropic superyachts.

Next up: a 12-month global circumnavigation beginning in March 2027, with stops in Antarctica, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Sargasso Sea. The REV Ocean superyacht will share its data openly.
