Acer has quietly entered the handheld gaming arena with the Nitro Blaze Link, a dedicated remote-play device that streams PC games over a local network. The surprise launch at Computex 2024 signals the company's ambition to capture a slice of the booming cloud and remote gaming market, directly challenging the Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge.

Acer unveiled the Nitro Blaze Link alongside its annual laptop refreshes at Computex, held in Taipei this June. While the company is best known for affordable gaming laptops and monitors, this dedicated handheld marks a strategic bet on the growing trend of game streaming away from the desk. The device is designed to solve a specific pain point for owners of powerful gaming PCs: how to play their library anywhere in the house without sacrificing performance or battery life.

The handset itself features a typical landscape layout with dual analog sticks, D-pad, and shoulder buttons, resembling a Nintendo Switch but slimmer. Inside, early leaks point to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 or a MediaTek Kompanio chip, paired with 4GB to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard storage. The display is expected to be a 7-inch IPS panel at 1080p, 60Hz—adequate for the 1080p streaming target. Crucially, connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and optional 5G via a nano-SIM slot, enabling remote play not just at home but over cellular networks.

Key to the Acer Nitro Blaze Link is its software integration. The device runs a custom Android launcher optimized for Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Steam Link, plus Acer's own GameFi optimiser. Acer claims latency as low as 10–15ms on local Wi-Fi 6, though independent tests will be needed. The battery is rated at 15W·h, promising 8–10 hours of streaming under typical use. Pricing is rumoured to start at $299, directly undercutting the Logitech G Cloud’s $349 launch price.

Industry analysts see this as a calculated move. "Acer is leveraging its PC gaming ecosystem to offer a companion device that keeps gamers inside its hardware ecosystem," says Michael Cai, director of gaming at Interpret. "The market for dedicated streaming handhelds is still small—under 2 million units annually—but it's growing at 25% year-over-year."
